Master of Arts (MA) in Economics

Objective & Philosophy of Master of Arts in Economics

The Department of Economics will offer a Master of Arts degree with an emphasis on applied economics. The program will provide training as professional economists for employment in business international organizations government and in academics.It is also designed to enhance basic math and economics skills in students and prepare them for doctorate program in either in Bangladesh or overseas.

The university is confident that given the rigor of the program, students will be able to join Ph.D. Program in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. This program will have a low student-faculty ratio, allowing students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on research projects.

The department views a research experience as crucial to student intellectual growth. Consequently, all students are encouraged to complete a thesis or a substantive research paper. The quality and extent of student-faculty interaction is a distinct comparative advantage of our program.

Pre-requisites

The master's degree in economics will be approximately three to four semesters in length. The required courses are microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and mathematical economics. The thesis will receive three hours of credit. Students will be allowed to take six hours of cognate courses in business, mathematics, history, or any other area complementary to their program. The remaining coursework consists of electives. There is no language requirement.

In addition the department will offer applied courses in various fields of economic analysis. These fields include international economics, economic development, labor economics, monetary economics, public finance, economic history, and the history of economy.

Degree requirement

A Student must satisfy the following requirements to qualify for a degree of M A in Economics. In addition to the following courses a student, depending on his/her prior academic background may have to take pre-requisite courses.
